According to The American Red Cross, about 38 percent of the population is eligible to give blood, but less than 10 percent of those eligible actually do. This becomes a problem not only year round but during the summer months, when the number of donors decline due to vacations and travel.

“Right now, blood donations are going out faster than they are coming in,” said Kelly Isenor, External Communications Manager for the Red Cross Massachusetts Blood Services Region.

To fight against this summer’s blood shortage, local firefighters and police officers are teaming up once again for Worcester’s second annual Battle of the Badges blood drive.

“Police officers and firefighters know better than anyone how crucial it is to be prepared and have blood on the shelves before it is needed,” said Isenor.

Community members can join in on the friendly competition of Battle of the Badges blood drive by donating on Thursday, Aug. 2, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the DCU Center. Each donor gets one vote for Worcester Fire Department or Worcester Police Department. While bragging rights is a given, the winning badge will take home a trophy and $1,500 for the charity of their choice, courtesy of the Worcester Railers HC.

The first 100 donors will receive a ticket to the Massachusetts Pirates game on Saturday, Aug. 4, at the DCU Center, and all donors will get a free ticket to the Big E! Additionally, all blood drive donors will have free parking at the Major Taylor Garage and receive a free hot dog or veggie wrap from SAVOR food service at the DCU Center (please note, all prizes are non-transferable and not redeemable for cash).

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients.
