Are you a fan of the horror genre? If so, you need to tune in to The Radio of Horror, the longest-running horror show in New England, hosted by Dr. Chris, and found on 91.3 WCUW Live radio, one of the oldest stations in the country. Even more reason to tune in? The show, which runs Sunday night/Monday morning from midnight to 2 a.m., will hit its 10th anniversary Oct. 15. In honor of the big day, we sat down with Dr. Chris to talk about radio horror, hitting the 10-year mark and Halloween.
QUESTION: What made you want to start the show?
ANSWER: At the time, in 2007, there was no show like mine anywhere in the area. I looked all over the Internet, and there was maybe one other show in New England, and it ended up dissipating. So, I thought this would be a great opportunity, on top of the fact that Worcester hosts a horror convention called Rock and Shock.
Q: Where did your interest in horror come from?
A: Probably movies and comics. Vampire movies in the ’80s, like The Lost Boys and Fright Night. Also, the slasher genre, as well as horror comics.
Q: Did you ever think the show would make it to its 10-year anniversary?
A: No. There is just no other answer besides no.
Q: Where do you come up with the topics you discuss?
A: It’s on a week-by-week basis; it can always change based on who I can reach out to for an interview or whatever I can discuss. We play a lot of horror music, as well, so the show might be 50 percent talk and 50 percent music related to the horror or sci-fi genre. I’ve interviewed people like Nick King from Sinister, Malcom McDowell and Paul Dini, who created Harley Quinn. When we go to Rock and Shock, we always find new people to interview depending on whose there.
Q: What age group of people is your target demographic? How old does someone have to be to view the show appropriately?
A: We’ve had children’s book authors that we interviewed and posted online, but it’s on at midnight, so I’m if if you’re an adult, you can watch it. If you can watch The Walking Dead or Game of Thrones, then you can listen to my show.
Q: As a listener, what can I look forward to in the upcoming 10-year anniversary show?
A: We’re going to have various people on from the horror industry. I don’t know if anyone is going to be considered mainstream yet, but it’s going to be a lot of independent people from New England. There will be makeup artists, museum owners, artists and other critiques of the horror industry.
Q: Are you relating the 10-year anniversary show to Halloween at all?
A: Well it just happens to be in the middle of October, so that just goes without saying.
Q: How do you plan on keeping the show around in the future or even for another 10 years?
A: Even if the radio horror show itself doesn’t continue for another 10 years, I’ll still have my two podcasts, which are becoming more of a bigger deal. Those will continue, even if Radio of Horror doesn’t.
Q: Do I have to be really invested in horror to listen to your show?
A: Yes and no. We do cover horror most of the time. We’re never going to be talking about reality TV. There are some obscure references sometimes where we just go off on a tangent about something in the horror industry. If you have never heard of who these people are, you’re going to tune out. When I have guests on the show, I want to find out where they’ve been, schools they went to, what tragedies they’ve had in their life. We had on Paul Dini’s wife before we had on Paul Dini; her name is Misty Lee, she is a magician in Vegas. She did a video on woman’s domestic violence, so we also interview people like that.
Q: What is your favorite part about the show?
A: Probably the interviews.
Q: If I can’t stay up until midnight, is there a way I can stream your show after its already been on?
A: The interviews have been chopped up and put on YouTube and Vidme in a slideshow.
Q: Is there any additional information you want to share about the show or the 10-year anniversary?
A: We possibly will be having an editor from DC Comics on the show. This editor worked on a bunch of stories in the horror genre. There will be a lot of different independent artists or actors from low budget independent horror movies. The website for the show is www.radiohorror.wordpress.com.
