Pair four pretty girls (Jillian Jensen, Kimber-lee Jacobsen, Jiji Zucco, Simone Cardoso) with incredible talent, experience, and a positive message and you have the perfect equation for something almost unheard of ~ music that kids and their parents can agree on ~ and even listen to together.
The Varsity Girls are your typical teenagers ~ going to school and spending time with friends, going shopping and giggling about the texts they got last night. The only difference is that they balance all of this “normalcy” with a very busy schedule of rehearsals and performances as they chase their musical dreams. The girls are true role models to their younger fans, encouraging them with lyrics like “Go ahead and let it out, be you and take the vow, changing for no one,” a stand against the peer pressure to be just like everyone else just to fit in.
The girls have toured locally, performed the National Anthem at Fenway Park, and have even sung for President Obama. Their release party for the single “Be You” at the Hard Rock Café in Boston had a great audience turnout and the song has been receiving air play. The girls tell me that they were going through a Wendy’s drive-thru when they heard their song playing on the radio the first time ~ and they got out of the car and started dancing around to the astonishment of the staff whom they proudly told, “This is us!” Their musical tastes vary and they tell me that they’d love to collaborate with artists like Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Demi Lovato, Nick Jonas, Taylor Swift, and Justin Beiber, just to name a few.
So what makes those perfect harmonies…well, perfect? Jiji tells me that they’ve “…developed good ears for music and now we can just hear where the harmonies should go and how they should sound.” Jillian adds, “We work together well and can do more than the typical harmonies, but also add moving harmonies and different things that make the song something more.” What really separates The Varsity Girls from other girl groups out there is that instead of just being vocal and dance based, they can also play instruments including guitar, drums and piano. “Seriously, I wouldn’t be surprised if Simone could play the tuba,” Kimber-Lee tells Pulse.
The girls do have other interests they may pursue ~ college, nursing, pediatrics and speech pathology ~ but they all agree that performing is their passion and they are looking forward to seeing where this journey takes them. In the next couple of months, they will be taping the music video for their next single release, “Fairytale,” and performing at the Boston Music Awards (for which they’ve been nominated!) ~ and they also performed at the Boston tree-lighting ceremony to kick off the holidays. They recently recorded the theme song for the Nickelodeon Halo Awards and will be going to Miami to perform for 30,000 people at the American Airlines Arena. With all of this talent and energy The Varsity Girls have, Justin Beiber may just have to wait.
