Mountain of rock and blues

Derek Trucks Band and Bobby “Blue” Band come to Mount Wachusett

September 2004 – As summer comes to a close, Wachusett Mountain will come alive with a rock-and-roll and blues festival. On September 11 and 12, the Wachusett Mountain Music Festival will return for its seventh year. The festival, legendary for its great food, brewery and music, promises to be a fun time for all.

The festival will begin Saturday, September 11 with Rocktoberfest. Headlining will be the Derek Trucks Band, who has performed nationally with the Allman Brothers Band. The band incorporates the classic sounds of Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Marvin Gaye to create an original jazz-rock fusion. The recent release of their third album, Soul Serenade, has brought much attention to the band. Reviews call the bands sounds, spiritual, serene and calming. Soul Serenade is said to be the group’s best production yet.

Following the Derek Trucks Band, two local bands, The Push Stars and Bowman, will also perform. The Push Stars, a trio from Boston, have quickly gained a large fan base. Their songs can be recognized in hit movies, like “Something About Mary,” or from their appearances opening for such national acts as Matchbox 20.

The festival will also allow listeners to catch a glimpse at new, upcoming artists such as Bowman. He has recently performed at venues like The Lizard Lounge in Cambridge.

The legendary Bobby “Blue” Band will take the stage Sunday to kick off Bluesfest. In the past, Bluesfest has been rated the “Number One Blues Festival in New England,” by The Blues Audience and guarantees to bring the rhythm again this year. The Bobby “Blue Band, a product of Memphis’ Beal Street blues scene, have recorded and toured with the renowned B.B. King. The band will also be joined by Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, local favorite band Roomful of Blues and Dr. Harps Blues Revue.

The festival will also feature gourmet food and beverages. Patrons can enjoy barbecue throughout the day and purchase brews from all over at beer tents. The Wachusett Mountain will offer the scenic SkyRide, a chairlift ride to the summit, all day long.

The festival runs from 12 noon to 6 p.m. each day with admission prices ranging from $15 at the door on Saturday to $30 at the door on Sunday. However, the option to purchase tickets on-line is available, a savings of $5. Children age 6-12 are $5 each day and children 5 and under are free.
