“alt-J is a quirky band that, over the past few months, has found its way to the top of my listening pile and is now my favorite album of the year. I’m not alone.” ~ NPR, Bob Boilen
British band alt-J have been nominated for 3 Brit Awards, including British Breakthrough Act, British Album of the Year, and British Group of the Year. The Brit Awards are the British Phonographic Industry’s annual pop music awards and the British equivalent of the American Grammy Awards.
These nominations are more evidence of the band’s growing popularity and critical acclaim, which began in 2012 with the release of their debut album An Awesome Wave. The album this week broke into the Billboard Top 100 albums, jumping up 79…yes, you read that right, 79… spots. December saw the band’s debut land on the top 10 lists of numerous critics, including NPR’s Bob Boilen and Robin Hilton, The Wall Street Journal, Billboard, NME, The Guardian, and the BBC. An Awesome Wave was selected as the iTunes Alternative Breakthrough Album of 2012, and MTV selected alt-J as one of their Artists to Watch in 2013. The band also performed well on various reader polls, with a top 20 album and #2 Best New Band on Stereogum’s Gummy Awards and the #2 Rookie of the Year on Consequence of Sound’s readers’ poll. In the annual installment of their Readers’ Poll, the Pitchfork selected An Awesome Wave as the #3 Most Underrated Album, and alt-J were voted the #6 Best New Artist. The band’s song “Buffalo” was also included in the Golden Globe and Oscar-nominated new film by David O. Russell, Silver Lining’s Playbook, featuring Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, and Robert De Niro.
alt-J are hitting the road in North America this spring in support of An Awesome Wave. After extremely successful fall and winter tours and the recent win of the UK’s prestigious Mercury Prize Award, alt-j is thrilled at the prospect of their biggest U.S. tour yet. After announcing the tour last month, the band have sold out numerous dates and upgraded a number of shows to larger venues due to overwhelming demand. For the additional dates and upgraded dates, tickets will go on sale Friday, January 11 at 10 AM local time.
Tickets can be purchased at altjband.com/tickets for the just-added 3/3 Boston show @ Paradise.
