The Latino Education Institute (LEI) at Worcester State University (WSU) was founded in 2000 by a partnership of community leaders to narrow the achievement gap in education through research, policy development, and the provision of outcomes-based development programs in education, literacy, leadership, civic engagement, and health. Our mission is to improve the academic achievement and well-being of Latino students (grades K-12) and their families from the city of Worcester.

Friends and supporters will gather on the 2nd Floor of Worcester State University’s Administration Building (486 Chandler Street) on Thursday, October 11, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. to celebrate the Tenth Anniversary Celebration of the Latino Education Institute and the introduction of Barry M. Maloney as the 11th President of Worcester State University. LEI will be celebrating their cultural traditions during Hispanic Heritage Month with live music, dance performances, tapas and wine.

Interested in volunteering at LEI? The WSU Teaching Corps Program (TCP), a paid internship program that seeks to improve retention and work readiness of Latino and other under-represented students at WSU and increase the number of students considering a career in education. This internship allows students to work in the Worcester Public Schools as instructional assistants and earn money as they connect their learning to community development endeavors. Students gain applied skills, workforce preparation, and income by serving students in the Worcester Public Schools. Emphasis is placed on classrooms that serve a high number of Latino and English Language Learner students.
