Thousands of Gleeks flocked to the TD Garden to see their favorite losers from McKinley High School ~ along with the Dalton Academy Warblers ~ showcase their talents on their second worldwide tour.
The night kicked off with an energetic performance by The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers, more commonly known as The LXD. Based on a web series, this group incorporates various dance techniques while ~ in this performance ~ telling the story of how two “ordinary guys” became members of the LXD.
The “Glee” portion of the show opened with a video clip of Sue Sylvester trash-talking the glee club ~ what else is new! Meanwhile, her Cheerios parade through the audience, handing out her personal brand of barf bags. Sylvester warns, “You’re gonna need ’em, I’ve seen the show and it’s just awful.” Will Schuester, director of the Glee Club, jumps in and reassures the audience the show is going to be nothing short of spectacular. These video shorts appear throughout the show and add to the overall feeling of seeing the “Glee” show, not just a concert.
The set list featured a little bit of everything: “Glee” originals including “Loser Like Me,” covers of classics including, Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” as their opening number, and even moderns hits like Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.” The guys of the “Glee” cast even performed an acoustic cover of Rebecca Black’s “Friday,” and every single member of the audience, myself included, proudly joined in.
If you’re a Gleek like me, seeing the songs and dance numbers from the TV show brought live onstage is a completely difference experience. For example, seeing Artie get up out of his wheelchair and perform Men in Hat’s “Safety Dance” was so much more empowering than my TV could ever make it.
The show finishes with the entire cast performing a wonderful cover of Queen’s “Somebody to Love.” The Cheerios come out bearing the ever-popular slushies and proceed to give the audience what’s been come to be known as a “slushie facial.” Luckily for the people in the front rows, the cups are filled with confetti, not the frozen drink that has made its’ way onto nearly every member of the glee club.
Even if you don’t watch “Glee” or know anything about the show, you’d still enjoy seeing these guys live ~ they really do put on quite the show.
