The phenomenon of the internationally celebrated works of Stieg Larsson continues this fall with the release of The Girl Who Played With Fire to the home entertainment market.
The second film to be adapted from Larsson’s best-selling Millennium Trilogy of crime novels following last year’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, the highest-grossing European production of 2009 and a certified smash in the U.S. with its box office earnings of $9.9 million, The Girl Who Played With Fire marks the return of Lisabeth Salander, the pierced and punked-out computer-hacking heroine of Larsson’s celebrated series, which have sold some 40 million copies in nearly 50 countries around the world.
The Girl Who Played With Fire is directed by Daniel Alfredson and stars the inimitable Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist, both of whom reprise their roles from The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
Described as “sharply written, superbly acted, and fast-paced” by Reel Views and as a film that “rockets along with pulse-pounding tension” by Paper Magazine, The Girl With Who Played With Fire is available to home-viewing audiences in Swedish with English subtitles, as well as a dubbed version in English.
Currently enjoying a sensational theatrical release in the country’s top 100 markets, The Girl Who Played With Fire (current box office gross: $5 million) is on track to become one of 2010’s highest-grossing and well-received foreign language entries in the U.S., just as Music Box Films’ The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was earlier this year. Critics and audiences both agree that Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy and its film adaptations have quickly become international pop culture landmarks, led by the spectacular, sexy and singular film star Noomi Rapace.
