Interviews by Erin Hansen
Sure, rising temperatures, raging hormones, naked flesh reappearing from beneath layers of clothing ~ all signs that winter has finally taken the hint and gotten gone. But what’s the TRUE kick-off to that glorious time of year known as spring? It’s our annual Worcester Music Awards, and this year ~ our fourth ~ was killer. Those of you who attended (and shame on anyone who didn’t ~ you missed a great party!) know that once again the show was all about giving props to local musicians and to those who support the local music scene. And the Awards are such a collaborative effort that we have a ton of people to thank, starting with everyone who nominated and voted on-line. Then we have the sponsors who were so generous in supporting the event: Rolling Rock, Kurlan Music Center, City Music, Union Music, Jeff Vaghini of All Event Sound.Com, Mohegan Sun, Miraculous Creations, Music Go Round, and Steve Gaetz of Bedlam Productions. Next, we couldn’t have had an Awards show without a great club to house it in, so a big thank you goes out to Erick Godin and everyone at The Lucky Dog ~ you guys rock!!! Who’s next on our list of people who made this year’s Awards a blast? The performers! Give a hand to DJ Reckless, Kim Jennings, The Last Call Band, Righteous & Prospect, and Flock of Assholes. Mr. Jeff Royds of New England Garage Bands was our MC extraordinaire ~ announcing the winners, running the raffles, helping promote all the bands, and keeping the energy super high! We also want to thank Tom Cadrin, Jessica Botelho, Jenn Russo, Amanda Altena, and our photographer Jamie Ivins for all their help and support ~ and Wings Over Worcester and Little Caesars Pizza for keeping everyone extremely well fed. YUM!! WCCA Channel 13 The People’s Channel, was there, too, taping the night for future airings (Thanks, Mauro!). And last but not least, we also want to give a special round of applause to ALL the nominees in each category and thank all the music fans who came out to show them some love. We wouldn’t have such an incredible music scene without each and every one of you!
And now, without further ado, we proudly present interviews with some of the winners, photos from the event, and a complete list of all the bands, venues, and DJs who took home trophies at Pulse Magazine’s 2010 Worcester Music Awards!
DJ Reckless ~ Best Club DJ
Which DJs have had the most influence on you?
I had the privilege of working with DJ AM at The Spyder Room and Prey in the LA circuit around 2005. I’ve also had the privilege of working with DJ Skribble and DJ Scene who have been a major influence on my career. I’m glad that we have become friends.
First moment you realized you wanted to be a DJ?
I wanted to be a DJ since I was a young kid staying up late listening to mixshows and mixtapes.
What’s your never-fail “get it on” song/album?
I really don’t have one, I just life with that attitude.
What’s the most surprising thing that most people don’t know about you?
People see me as an image. They don’t understand me for the real person that I am. I love my lady, Nikki, and our daughter, Kalea, more than anything in this world. They are the two most important things in my day, and spending time with them is priceless. Also, I don’t listen to what I play in the club when I’m in the car.
Dream DJ to open for?
Already been there a bunch of times. I don’t really need to open for anybody anymore. I guess that comes with a “headliner” status. I still enjoy rocking out with a bunch of other DJs, though. DJ Ramma and I always throw a sick party. I love playing down at Shrine with DJ JD. Last summer was great, partying and jamming with Scene and Skribble.
Should we believe anyone who says he or she is in a band PURELY for the love of music? I see people like that all the time. If you are serious about a career, then money had to come into play at some point. You don’t buy a yacht in the underground.
Where can we find you this summer? I’ll still be at The Boiler Room, it is an amazing place to be able to play at. I’ve been the Thursday night resident DJ there for about a year and a half. The talent and business structure of the establishment is hard to match anywhere. Paul Aboody is a smart man. They do things right over there and I am glad to be a part of it. And I’ll keep playing at Bluri on Fridays. Jon Pypes always throws a great party. In North county, I’ll still be rocking 24 Bar with DJ Ramma. And besides all that, I have a lot of other gigs and festivals I’ll be performing at, too.
Favorite music from your setlist?
My scratch sample record I made for my sets in 2006.
What’s next for you, professionally speaking?
Well, I hope to be in the studio a lot more once we close the deal on our new house. I work with many great peoples and would like to collaborate on some projects. Working out in LA at MTV and with my friend Jeff from IMG opened up some doors for me. I want to utilize my connections and make history.
Any categories you’d like to see Pulse add to the WMAs next year?
I would like to see the promoters in the city and county get some recognition. They work so hard and deserve it. There is a lot that goes into nightlife, and without many of them, nightlife wouldn’t be where it’s at!
Parting words for our readers?
I just want to give thanks to my support mechanisms. I have the greatest family anyone could ask for. I work with the best promoters around. Thanks to Jon and Christina Pypes for always looking out. Paul, David, Roger, and Selim at the Boiler Room for always showing me respect and giving me a place to share my remixes. John and Coady from Red Carpet Worcester for believing in my talent. It’s also been nice working with Kate Talbert on our Upcoming ventures. I also can’t forget the “Top Shelf Entertainment” Crew for bringing me into their exclusive nights in Boston. Dreams become reality if you work for them. I’m living proof!

We especially would like to thank our families for their love and support and allowing us to go out every Saturday night to do what we love. Our love goes out to them also.
Kim Jennings ~ Best Female Vocalist
Who’s the one famous musician (dead or alive) you wish you could perform with?
If I could sing harmony for Ella Fitzgerald…
First moment you realized you wanted to play in a band?
I knew I loved music a long time ago, but it wasn’t ‘til I found an amazing community of local performing songwriters about 3 years ago that I caught the songwriting bug, and literally felt driven to write and play music all the time.
What’s your never-fail “get it on” song/album (mine’s Page and Plant’s “No Quarter,” in case you were wondering)?
Martin Sexton’s “Can’t Stop Thinking About You” from his album Glory Bound.
How do you think you’d do on “American Idol?”
I have a unique voice but I don’t think it’s an “Idol” voice. There’s a lot of power singing on Idol. I’d have to work on that…
What’s the most surprising thing that most people don’t know about you?
I love my sad, dark side.
Did you start off playing the instrument you’re on now, or did you play something else first?
I started by teaching myself piano, then taught myself guitar…now I do both.
Dream band to open for?
Heart!!
Guiltiest musical pleasure?
I get super-nostalgic for 80s pop music.
Should we believe anyone who says he or she is in a band PURELY for the love of music?
Probably not…I think if you’re in a band, you have to love being up there on stage too. And why else would you practice your butt off, spend so much time, and be working so hard to promote yourself without loving the performance part too, for whatever reason you love it?
What gets your vote for dirtiest [well-known] song from any decade?
“Right Hand Man” (Joan Osborne) or “I Touch Myself” (The Divinyls)
Plans for the summer?
Getting Birch Beer Records’ music ~ from Dan Cloutier, Levi Schmidt and myself ~ heard by many more people. And making more music!!

Playing out to promote my (debut!!) CD “My Own True North.”

OMG seriously…yikes, do I have to remember that? Probably…”Take My Breath Away” by Berlin or “Crazy For You by Madonna.”

Ethan Caouette ~ Best Male Vocalist (Soulstice)
Who’s the one famous musician (dead or alive) you wish you could have join the band?
Miles Davis….Soulstice has been looking for a trumpet player and I can’t think of anyone better! I also wouldn’t mind jamming with Hendrix or SRV on some blues.
First moment you realized you wanted to play in a band?
After seeing my brother play in his first band, “Affinity” in 8th grade I quickly decided I couldn’t let that hack show me up!
Who came up with the name of the band [Soulstice]?
I came up with the name but Melissa [Gates] came up with the perfect name for our first (if ever) album entitled….”The Beatquinox.”
What’s your never-fail “get it on” song/album?
I always revert back to the mix I made in college for that one…Bob Marley’s mellow mood mix…if it doesn’t get you laid you probably have fungus.
How do you think you’d do on “American Idol?”
I think my performance would rival that of the great William Hung though I could hardly stand in that man’s shadow with the depth of talent he possesses.
What’s the most surprising thing that most people don’t know about you?
I guess that I am a black belt and have been training in mixed martial arts for over 7 years.
Did you start off playing the instrument you’re on now, or did you play something else first?
Always played guitar but still hope to learn piano someday.
Dream band to open for?
The Black Crowes
Guiltiest musical pleasure?
Rock operas & Oasis
Alright, we have to ask ~ favorite band beverage?
Jager bombs Jager bombs! Scotchy Scotch Scotch in my belly…..
Should we believe anyone who says he or she is in a band PURELY for the love of music?
If I were you and heard a musician say that I would say “I already heard that one you unoriginal bastard.” (So, that’s a “no,” right?)
What gets your vote for dirtiest [well-known] song from any decade?
Whenever that song comes on that’s like “Hey, you’re crazy bitch but you f*ck so good I’m on top of it” I have to do earmuffs. [Ethan ~ that song is called, ironically enough, “Crazy Bitch.” And it’s by Buckcherry. And I love them.] At least “Walk this Way” was a little more subtle when he said “…down on a muffin.”
Plans for the summer?
Hopefully solving the country’s healthcare reform issues…But I’m an optimist.
Favorite song from your set list?
Currently, I bounce between “Karma” by Alicia Keys and “100 Yard Dash” by Raphael Saadiq.
What’s next for the band? Touring? CD? Incarceration?

Some nookie from Snooky? I’d probably say pass, those Jersey girls would eat me alive!
Flash forward a couple of years ~ reality show we’re most likely to see you on: “Celeb Rehab w/ Dr. Drew?” “Sex Rehab w/Dr. Drew?” “Dancing with the Stars?”
Definitely “Sex Rehab” along with Dustin Diamond. I gotta one up Screech in that department.
What’s your band’s tagline?
“Soulstice….whatever makes the ladies dance.”
As a singer, famous musician, dead or alive, you’d most like to be compared to?
I’d love to be compared to any of my influences. I love Stevie Wonder’s voice but find myself more akin to a Robert Plant, Steven Tyler or Chris Robinson w/ about 1/5th the talent.
Any categories you’d like to see Pulse add to the WMAs next year?
Best remake of a song
Any question you wish we’d asked you this year?
Yes….what is your social security number and address so we can mail your check. [Folks, we’ve got ourselves a jokester here!]
Parting words for our readers?
Thanks for supporting local music and please keep doing it! Don’t let an iPod replace the vibes of a great live performance.
Birch Hill Dam ~ Best Hardcore/Metal Act
Who’s the one famous musician (dead or alive) you wish you could have join the band?
Billy Gibbons, alive and well of course ~ Mike
First moment you realized you wanted to play in a band?

It was pretty much a combined effort with the help of 3 marbles, a feather, and an old shoe horn.
What’s your never-fail “get it on” song/album?
Queen’s “Fat Bottom Girls”
What’s the most surprising thing that most people don’t know about you?
The surprising thing is a lot of people don’t know we will play for peanuts …Haha, really!

We used to be in a pretty mean barber shop quartet actually. This musical journey seems to working out like the mutt’s nuts now though.
Dream band to open for?

Guiltiest musical pleasure?
Supreme Beings of Leisure is a guilty pleasure ~ no need to keep it quiet, though.
Alright, we have to ask ~ favorite band beverage?
Something cold. Do you really not already know this answer? OK, OK, COORS DIESEL, Baby!!
Should we believe anyone who says he or she is in a band PURELY for the love of music?
Absofrigginlutely, but anybody that has to tell you is probably telling you a fib.

Best Heavy Rock and Fave Shot
Any question you wish we’d asked you this year?
Favorite recently dead celebrity
Parting words for our readers?
There seems to be a lack of local radio media available to local bands in this area in particular. We would like to try and show some support in some positive manor and try and change it. The internet is great too but it isn’t as geared to a local fan base as local terrestrial radio I think ~ Joe
Thank you WORCESTER this is a great place to be!
One Step Further ~Best Jam 7 Groove Act
Scott MgGrath – keys/vocal, Adam Morin – Bass Ryan Pasakinskas – acoustic guitar/vocals
Jay Anderson – drums, Rob Thompson – sax/vocals, Tim Gruntman – electric guitar
Who’s the one famous musician (dead or alive) you wish you could have join the band?
Adam: That’s a really tough call. I’d probably go with either David Gilmour or Steven Wilson
Ryan: Peter Gabriel, but Peter Gabriel in the Genesis days, love the costumes.
Jay: Agreed… tough call. Probably Frank Zappa (circa 1974 “Roxy Band”)
Rob: Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull
Tim: James Brown! Who wouldn’t want the Godfather of Soul in their band?
First moment you realized you wanted to play in a band?
Adam: It was Clapton’s Unplugged album that made me want to pick up a guitar and then David Gilmour that caused me not to put it down. Of course I’m playing bass with OSF so you can just throw all of that out the window.
Ryan: I think it would be last year when we started playing together. I had the attitude that being in bands was too much work, with personality clashes and such. But things just worked with these guys.
Jay: Ever since I could consciously hear and react to sound I have been playing something. Banging on coffee cans and garbage pails as a young child and such.. My father is a professional musician and I always had music around me and was encouraged to explore it.
Rob: For me, it started when I used to watch the jazz band play at my sister’s concerts. That’s what made me want to pick up sax and made me want to be in a band.
Tim: I don’t remember the moment. It must go back to some of my first memories. I started playing at 11 years old. Music has always been around since I was a child.
Who came up with the name of the band?
Scott: Me or Ryan?
Adam: I think I was voted out of this equation.
Ryan: I think it was me. We had our first gig but no name and we needed to make posters, it was the only name we all didn’t hate.
Jay: yea… that was funny. we are all into different stuff(musical influence) so the ideas and suggestions were all over the place.. It was impossible to totally please everybody.. As Ryan said, it was the one we all didn’t hate
What’s your never-fail “get it on” song/album?
Adam: “Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Picture” from Pink Floyd’s 1969 album Ummagumma. Okay, not really but it could be fun. I bet Ryan goes with Tom Petty’s “You Got Lucky” and Jay picks Tull’s “Bungle in the Jungle.”
Ryan: Actually my pick is Angus and Julia Stone’s A Book Like This, great disc for all occasions, but especially the “get it on” occasion.
Jay – Depends on the situation… ; ) But generally, I go for the Grant Green and John Coltrane.
Rob: Anything off of Morning View by Incubus works for me.
Tim: Old electric blues like Muddy Watters, Sonny Boy Williamson, John Lee Hooker, Howlin’ Wolf usually puts me in the mood. John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme is also an excellent choice.
For the singer(s) in the band ~ how do you think you’d do on “American Idol?”
Scott: I’d find a way to skate by each week based on pity votes. Ryan would get unfairly judged by Simon for making funny faces while performing.
Ryan: I was thinking I would be ridiculed by Simon for my singing, never mind the faces.
Rob: I don’t think I’d make it through an audition without a band behind me.
What’s the most surprising thing that most people don’t know about you?
Jay: I am a juggler.
Ryan: I play a mean ping pong.
Did you start off playing the instrument you’re on now, or did you play something else first?
Scott: Yes
Adam: Actually the first time I ever played bass was when Ryan asked me to fill in with his previous band.
Ryan: Does clarinet in 4th grade count?
Rob: I started out on alto sax and then switched to tenor sax. I now play a number of other instruments as well.
Tim: Yes, I started by picking up an old guitar that was in a closet and began teaching myself some chords. I also dabble in drums, bass, and percussion.
Jay – See question 2. haha.. Drumming was always inherent for me though I play many other instruments… Rhythm was developed first.
Dream band/artist to open for?
Scott: Dave Matthews Band or Shakira
Adam: Unfortunately none that we would fit in with. The top of my list would be probably be Porcupine Tree or Opeth.
Ryan: DMB for sure
Jay: I hate to over-Dave it up.. but it would be a good fit and a great honor.
Rob: Dave Matthews Band would be the perfect act for us to open for.
Tim: The New Mastersounds. What?
Guiltiest musical pleasure?
Adam: I have to go with Sarah Brightman on this one.
Ryan: Heartbeat by Tahiti 80, look it up, know my shame.
Jay: I feel no guilt for this… but in the eyes of others… “Single Ladies” by Beyonce, that’s just plain old great pop music.
Rob: “If You Steal My Sunshine” by Len
Tim: Playing guitar and singing children’s songs to my infant daughter. So much for my rock and roll image.
Favorite beverage?
Scott: I’m a wino
Adam: What won’t we drink? Beer and wine are obvious choices but gin is definitely a popular choice.
Ryan: There was one G & T night at practice, it was decided best not to repeat. I would say wine is a safe choice though.
Jay: Water. But in the alcoholic realm, a workhorse drink for a majority of the group for a while was Night Train (talk about a guilty pleasure!).
Rob: Definitely wine. A nice dark beer will do the trick, though.
Tim: Gin or nice wine when drinking for pleasure. Beer is usually the drink of choice on the gig.
Should we believe anyone who says he or she is in a band PURELY for the love of music?
Scott: No.
Adam: Absolutely!
Ryan: If anyone has been in an original band they know there are very few alternative reasons to play.
Jay: Would I drive an hour each way and move a drum set in the pouring rain or snow to some gigs for next to or no pay if it wasn’t all about love? Believe it.
Rob: Believe it – I do it for the love of the music – oh, and the Bentley I’ll be driving.
Tim: We have all gone to great lengths that don’t make sense to normal people. People who play music would have quit a long time ago if it weren’t for the fact that we are driven by a deep passion and love for music.
What gets your vote for dirtiest [well-known] song from any decade?
Adam: There are definitely some great ones from rap artists like Eazy-E or Akinyele but can anything top Lil’ Kim’s “How Many Licks?”
Ryan: Pick any 2 Live Crew song and there is your winner. They’re well-known right?
Jay: Definitely “Shake, Rattle, and Roll” by Big Joe Turner 1954 – “I’m a one-eyed cat, peepin’ in a seafood store.” Pretty risque for ’54.
Rob: “Lollipop” by Lil Wayne
Tim: “Take Your Hands Off My Mojo” by Coot Grant and Kid Wesley Wilson.
Plans for the summer?
Ryan: Gigs, gigs, and more gigs.
Jay: That’s right, Giggidy Gigs. And recording the new record.
Rob: Sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll.
Tim: More of the same with hopefully some vacations.
Favorite song from your set list?
Scott: “Telephone Tough Guy”
Adam: “Hurt to Feel” is definitely up there but a new song we’ve been working on is likely to supplant it soon.
Ryan: “Different” is my fave, pick up our CD and you can hear the story of why it’s my fave.
Jay: Right now, my favorite song is “Walking,” it’s great,
Rob: “Hurt to Feel”
Tim: Today it’s “Telephone Tough Guy.”
What’s next for the band?
Scott: Hopefully, touring and full length CD.
Ryan: We just finished our first album, 4 studio tracks and 6 live tracks, and we’re already looking forward to doing a full length studio.
Rob: I’m looking forward to having a CD out there. Touring? Possibly. Incarceration? Definitely.
Tim: Hopefully, a full length CD. There is so much material. It’s hard to narrow it down!
First song you ever made out to (no, not as a band ~ with your first girlfriend/boyfriend)?
Adam: Who actually remembers that? I’m noticing a common theme here. Are you hitting on us?
Ryan: “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” no joke. (Now THAT is the best answer EVER…especially if it’s true!)
Jay: There was no music. Just vibe.
Flash forward a couple of years ~ reality show we’re most likely to see you on?
Scott: Definitely “Celebrity Rehab”…but more likely “Dr. Phil.”
Ryan: I would give a limb to see Adam on “Dancing with the Stars.”
Jay: “Man vs. Wild”
Tim: Is “Flavor of Love” still on? I want my chance at Flavor Flav.
If your band had a tag-line, it would be…?
Jay: “I’d like to see you walk a mile in my sh#t!”
For the singers ~ famous musician, dead or alive, you’d most like to be compared to?
Scott: Chris Cornell
Ryan: Tom Waits, I say that as a songwriter more than a vocalist.
Rob: Maynard James Keenan
Any categories you’d like to see Pulse add to the WMAs next year?
Ryan: Maybe a category for best open mic?
Tim: Best Improvisation, Jazz, Jam or otherwise.
Parting words for our readers?
Ryan: From all of us, a big thank you to all who voted! Those who don’t know us yet, look us up on facebook, myspace or at www.onestepfurthermusic.com for our schedule or to pick up a copy of our newly released self titled album. See you out there!
Tim: Namaste.
Johnny Dollar Experiment, Best Jazz Act
Who’s the one famous musician (dead or alive) you wish you could have join the band?
Frank Zappa might be cool with us. We sometimes consider looking for something new to add, especially a capable singer. Really, we have like the best musicians who can stand up against anyone else in the world.
First moment you realized you wanted to play in a band?
For most of us, it was when we first saw The Beatles on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” their first appearance on that show blew us away. In high school, it beat actually working for money, we made more playing than most other jobs could offer young people. That was a long time ago, before bands started giving it away.
Who came up with the name of the band?
It is named after our drummer, John “Johnny Dollar” Murzycki. He was fascinated with this old time radio series. We started out playing 60s cover tunes but got bored, so Joe D’Angelo and Mauro started writing some original arrangements, experimenting with vintage hits from the 60s. We loved it and really found a unique niche that continues to inspire us today. That’s where we get the “Experiment” in our name. How far out can we go? Is sort of our mantra. It’s groovy.
What’s your never-fail “get it on” song/album?
Al Green’s “Let’s Get Together,” Isley Brothers “Between the Sheets,” Also Wagner’s “Flight of the Valkeries,” the keyboardist likes to do it to Mozart’s Requiem.
For the singer(s) in the band ~ how do you think you’d do on “American Idol?”
We would prefer to fist fight the “American Idol” singers first, and then see how they would sound after a good beating. That’s what real life does to artist, it beats ‘em up. The sound that follows is what becomes authentic.
What’s the most surprising thing that most people don’t know about you?
Since I was awarded the Key to the City, we meet at 3am, once a week, unlock City Hall, and play pretend City Council meeting ~ we set up like “The Tonight Show,” and we play the band.
Did you start off playing the instrument you’re on now, or did you play something else first? I think we all started on our current instruments. Mauro, our keyboardist, started as a drummer in elementary school, and today Joe doubles a lot on bass.
Dream band to open for? JAZZED UP, our alias band, that way we would get paid twice. Seriously, we would be great sharing a stage with Steely Dan, Fleck Tones, Herbie Hancock, the old Mothers of Invention, bands along those lines.
Guiltiest musical pleasure? The time we spend without fans and each other before and after each gig. We all seem to share the same sense of music appreciation, comedy, and values. It’s a lot of fun.
Alright, we have to ask ~ favorite band beverage?
All around, coffee first, then it is John ~ Crown Royal, Mauro ~ any Martini, Joe ~ Anisette, Vic ~ Soda coffee
Should we believe anyone who says he or she is in a band PURELY for the love of music? That and for some the social networking opportunities. Around here it is not the money. Most quality bands, do not get paid what they deserve in this local market. So if you are in a band most likely your doing because you are in it for the experience, joy of music, or the vanity that surrounds it. Oh, yeah and hope. Hope that you just might get lucky enough to break it big.
What gets your vote for dirtiest [well-known] song from any decade?
“Let’s Get It On,” you said “well known,” right?
Plans for the summer? Shopping for jazz gigs, freelancing, writing, playing music, enjoying the little good weather we have up here in New England.
Favorite song from your set list? “My Generation,” “Crazy,” “Love Me Two Times,” “Surfin USA”
What’s next for the band? Maybe another CD soon, we’ve been doing stuff in Boston, maybe more Boston, Providence gigs, prefer good ol’ Worcester, though.
First song you ever made out to? Too high at the time to even recall. We grew up in the 60s, man. Not many of us can remember that far back (at least what we pretend to want to forget).
Snooky…yes or no? No comment. Most local musicians cannot afford the legal representation that may be required for this answer.
Flash forward a couple of years ~ reality show we’re most likely to see you on: Celeb Rehab w/ Dr. Drew? Sex Rehab w/Dr. Drew?Dancing with the Stars?
“Band Edge” a local real music show on WCCA TV is cool. No “commercial” TV shows, unless we become the new Monkees or something. We would be happy to judge on “Dancing with the Stars,” however. Is there good dough in that?
If your band had a tag-line, it would be…? “We play what we play whether you like it or not.”
For the vocalists ~ famous musician, dead or alive, you’d most like to be compared to? Joe Cocker, Lou Reed, Neil Young, Rod Stewart, because, let’s face it, anyone can sound like a good singer compared to them.
Any categories you’d like to see Pulse add to the WMAs next year? Seriously, add “The Venue that Pays the Best” and “The Best Booking Agent.” Musicans’ questions.

Marvelous 3’s – “Ready Sex Go”
As a vocalist ~ how do you think you’d do on “American Idol?”
Well, I’m sure they’d rip me to pieces! I consider myself more a songwriter than a singer.
Ever get stage fright?
Yeah, at sound check. Once I’m up there I’m fine. What makes me nervous is not knowing how the sound guy will make us sound. It’s always different because we don’t take our own soundguy with us for every show. I like consistency. Working with people who are familiar with our sound is so much easier.
What’s the most surprising thing that most people don’t know about you?
I was voted ‘most quiet’ for my high school yearbook!
Were you always a singer, or did you start off playing an instrument first?
Nah, I’m a rhythm guitar player first. Aside from when I’m rehearsing or performing, the only time I really ever sing is when I’m writing and sometimes in the car.
Dream band to open for?
Already did it. We got to open for Soul Asylum in NY in 2006. Would also love to open for Muse, Radiohead, Golden Smog, Jimmy Eat World or the Jayhawks.
Guiltiest musical pleasure?
I guess you could say I’m a fan of Avril Lavigne & Taylor Swift.
Any really devoted male groupies?
Yeah, we’ve got a few that come out to most shows…
Should we believe anyone who says he or she is in a band PURELY for the love of music?
You know they love the music if they are still actively doing it, because almost nobody gets paid to do original music anymore.
What gets your vote for dirtiest [well-known] song from any decade?
In general – The Bloodhound Gang. See the live show!
Plans for the summer?
We [GrandEvolution] will be releasing our 3rd full length record in June. Then we’re planning a summer tour.
Favorite song from your band’s set list?
“Welcome.” It’s our newest song and will be on our upcoming release. It’s just really different for us. With this particular song we recorded it at our rehearsal space after just a couple rehearsals. The version was incredibly rough. I sent the song like that to Jason Elgin down in Birmingham to have him produce it. I recently flew down to finish up the vocal tracks, and I can’t wait to hear the final mix. It was a different recording experience for GrandEvolution but I like the new direction we are taking and what I’ve heard so far sounds fantastic.
What’s next for you?
CD Release & touring! I’m really looking forward to touring. I’ve wanted to do this since we started playing together but I never had a lineup that could travel.
Which famous singer, dead or alive, you’d most like to be compared to?
Well, I’ve had people compare me to Belinda Carlisle quite a few times, but I prefer Shirley Manson.
Parting words for our readers?
Thanks to everyone for voting, and hope to see you at a show soon. Congrats to all the nominees! Check us out on ITunes and on the web at: www.GrandEvolution.com and www.myspace.com/GrandEvolution. We’re

Walter and Valerie Crockett ~ Legends Award
On Oct. 4 of last year, Valerie Crockett, a beloved singer, songwriter, and musician, passed away after a lengthy illness. She and her husband Walter, who continues to be an inspirational member of our community, have done so much for the local music scene over the past decades that a mere “Thank you” and award cannot come close to expressing the appreciation of everyone who plays, loves, and supports music in this area and beyond. For many of us, The Crocketts ARE the core of the Worcester County Music Scene, and always will be.
Carl Kamp ~ Lifetime Achievement
Carl Kamp, President of Union Music and third generation owner, is one of New England’s most talented and respected classical guitarists and a member of the Boston Classical Guitar Society. Despite his classical background, though, Carl has quite the ear and appreciation for all genres of music, and has help decades of musicians (yup, even metal-heads and punks!) find exactly the right instrument to match their needs and budgets. Under his calm, sweet demeanor, watchful eye, and dry wit, Union Music has grown tremendously, especially with the addition of the Acoustic Guitar Room, which now houses the largest selection of fine acoustic instruments anywhere in the region.
Whether you’re just about to pick out your first set of drums or are a pro looking for the newest axe, whether you just have a question or are in the mood for a full-out discussion about new technology, going to see Carl will ensure that you’re getting advice from the very best.
Thank you, Carl, for supporting musicians of all genres and all levels for so many years…!

Getting to Know Your Host,
Jeff Royds of New England Garage Bands
First, congratulations on your recent nuptials! Second, what say we give our readers a little glimpse into the man that is Jeff Royds…and what makes him tick. Can you tell us ~ in a few sentences ~ what NEGB is and why all the musicians in the area are singing (Get it? Singing!) its praises?
Sure! In a nut shell, NEGB is an all-in-one website for hard working original musicians who want a quality site to promote their band and meet other bands. We have helped more bands get gigs at area clubs and make contacts that they never would have made without us. Some of the features of NEGB1.com is being able to create and maintain your own profile, post your music, shows, and videos, sell your merch and keep 100% of the profits, get your band’s music on the #1 music video game in the country ~ Rock Band, enjoy discounts on recording studio time, get Daddy’s Junky Music gift cards, and have your band interviewed on our weekly “Behind the Scenes” podcast that is heard by hundreds of people every week. Come June, we’re bringing back, by popular demand, the only 24/7 online radio station playing nothing but local indie rock bands from the NEGB site “WPL2 Play Live! Play Loud!” Radio.
One of the reasons we asked you to host our Awards is, of course, because you are so tightly tied into the musical community and have done so much for many of the bands nominated…but also because you also have a great speaking/radio voice. Did it come to you naturally or was it something you worked on?
Ha! I wish. I always had a deep voice but I was cursed with the worst Boston accent. I grew up in Waltham so the letta “r” was not in my ABCs. I have to credit Julie Kramer of WFNX for relentlessly teasing me about it while I was interning for her in the mid 90s. She wasn’t mean about it but she made sure I knew what I was doing wrong so I would be more aware of it. I hope one day I will become as great a broadcaster as she is.
You front the band Bullethead (which, just so our readers know, wasn’t allowed into the competition because it might have been seen as a conflict of interest) ~ tell us a little about the band and what you guys have been up to.
Thanks for saying it would have been a conflict ~ and not because no one would have nominated us! LOL. Bullethead just celebrated our 2nd year and will be hitting the studio this month to start recording our first CD as a band. We added a real bass player recently and an additional guitarist so I can focus more on singing and stage presence. I think the line up we have now will stick. We’re on our second drummer, third bass player and forth guitarist. I think that’s enough for this decade. Check us out at www.negb1.com/Bullethead.
