Editor’s Quick Pick
The Dear Hunter ~ ACT III (and for that matter, Acts II and III as well). I wasn’t sure what to expect based on the band’s name ~ Metal? Nu-Metal? Neither…They’re actually a band ~ and a very talented one, at that, who has brought back a sadly dormant form of music, the rock opera. Obviously (and gloriously!) influenced by Queen, Styx, Meatloaf, and The Who’s Tommy, The Dear Hunter has created a sprawling piece of theatre that spans three acts already and is slated to continue for three more. Check out Acts I – III ~ and pay close attention to the CD jacket cover and inserts ~ the artwork is exceptional. Plan to listen to the CDs when you have time to hear them all the way through ~ they deserve more than just a few minutes here and a few minutes there. The sound is epic and grand, creating a magnetic combination of melodic and metal. www.thedearhunter.com
Special Note:
Beastie Boys tour dates cancelled, album release postponed Adam Yauch diagnosed with parotid gland tumor
Beastie Boys issued the following statement at the end of July: ‘Adam “MCA” Yauch of Beastie Boys was diagnosed last week as having a cancerous tumor in his left parotid (salivary) gland. Luckily it was caught early and is localized in one area, and as such is considered very treatable. It will however require surgery and several weeks of additional treatment. Fortunately the cancer is not in a location that will affect Yauch’s vocal chords. Beastie Boys have canceled all upcoming concert appearances to allow time for Yauch’s surgery and recovery. The release of the band’s forthcoming album Hot Sauce Committee Part 1 will also be pushed back. Paraphrasing from a video statement on www.Beastieboys.com, Yauch said, “I just need to take a little time to get this in check, and then we’ll release the record and play some shows. It’s a pain in the neck (sorry had to say it) because I was really looking forward to playing these shows, but the doctors have made it clear that this is not the kind of thing that can be put aside to deal with later.”’ A statement from EMI reads: “Our thoughts, love and prayers are with Adam Yauch, his family and the Beastie Boys. The most important thing is to allow Adam to focus on staying healthy. We wish him all the best and a speedy recovery.”
We at Pulse echo that sentiment.

30 SECONDS TO MARS
Virgin Records is pleased to announce that it has signed a new worldwide deal with LA rock band 30 Seconds to Mars. The band, fronted by vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Jared Leto, is currently in the studio in LA recording their third album with acclaimed producer Flood, known for his work with U2, Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, and Smashing Pumpkins. Due this fall, the as-yet-untitled album is the follow-up to 2005’s platinum-selling A Beautiful Life, which sold more than three million albums and singles worldwide and spawned two Top 10 Modern Rock singles, “From Yesterday” and “The Kill.” The latter set a radio record for the longest-running hit in the history of Modern Rock radio play when it remained on the national airplay chart for more than 50 weeks following its No. 3 peak in 2006. “From Yesterday” was the band’s first No. 1 at the format. Its epic video was the first American music video ever shot in the People’s Republic of China.
30 Seconds to Mars’ new album is a collection of the thoughts and ideas that the band (which also includes drummer Shannon Leto and guitarist Tomo Mili?evi?) have experienced after spending several years on the road. The songs reflect a willingness to take chances and create a pivotal, game-changing album. As Flood recently told Billboard.com, “These guys wanted to move into a different place and that’s always a big challenge. They had established themselves very firmly in one arena when Jared first talked to me. It was about trying to make a ‘classic album,’ and that’s by pushing themselves and me to a place that you may not have expected to go, so it requires truth, honesty, and a lot of hard work. Those sorts of things I find very rewarding.”
“It’s great to finally move forward and focus on what’s most important to us all ~ the music,” says Jared Leto. “We are excited about starting over with the many talented people at Virgin/EMI, and sharing our new music with the fans in the very near future. We will never forget the unrelenting support from all our friends, family, and fans around the world.”
“We are thrilled to have set aside our differences and signed a new agreement with 30 Seconds to Mars,” says Nick Gatfield, EMI Music’s President of A&R Labels ~ North America & the UK. “Our relationship has been extremely rewarding and successful, and we’re eager to move forward and put our global team to work on the brilliant new album they are recording with Flood.”
“I am excited to be a part of 30 Seconds to Mars’ next chapter,” says Rob Stevenson, President of Virgin A&R Labels. “Not only are they one of the most important bands in rock music today, but I admire their commitment to the online world. It has made them digital pioneers in terms of reaching fans where they live and breathe music.”
Formed by Jared and Shannon Leto in 1998, 30 Seconds to Mars have won numerous awards and accolades, including an MTV Video Music Award, three MTV EMA, an MTV Latin and Asia Award, a Fuse Award, and three Kerrang! awards. They have nearly 500 live performances under their belts since the release of A Beautiful Life, which has earned them a growing, loyal, global fan base. The band is also known as one of the world’s most progressive online. Their fans ~ dubbed The Echelon ~ participate in both band and charity-driven activities. 30 Seconds to Mars now boast more than 28 million plays on MySpace and more than one million fans on iLike/Facebook, and have received more than 100 million views on YouTube.

RATT & EXTREME
Celebrated rock and music video pioneers Ratt and Extreme have teamed up to bring you this summer’s most rockin’ tour lineup. The tour features sets from both bands; Ratt, who closes each show, will celebrate the 25th anniversary of their landmark debut “Out of the Cellar” by playing the album in its entirety.
Both bands are excited about the double bill. “Warren DeMartini and Nuno Bettencourt on same stage, same night?? ‘Nuff said, We’ll see you there!” says Ratt’s Bobby Blotzer. Extreme’s Nuno Bettencourt agrees: “One hot summer night. Two bands fully loaded with musicianship. Mix in one part memorable songwriting. Add nine ounces of passionate performers. Throw in three well respected guitarists. Add a touch of West Coast raunch and a hint of East Coast funk. And you get yourself a recipe for one night of unforgettable rock and roll.”
Ratt is currently in the studio recording its first new record in over 10 years ~ due for release this fall ~ with famed producer Elvis Baskette. The band announced its new partnership with Loud & Proud/Roadrunner Records earlier this year.
Extreme recently released Saudades de Rock (pronounced “sow-dodge”), their first new album in thirteen years; it’s a groundbreaking record that reaffirms the Central MA-bred foursome’s stature as innovators in the world of rock & roll.
Over the past two years, Ratt has toured the world in support of their releases Tell The World – The Very Best Of Ratt and their first ever DVD, Videos from the Cellar – The Atlantic Years. During this time, the current lineup of Stephen Pearcy, Warren DeMartini, Bobby Blotzer, Robbie Crane and Carlos Cavazo played shows in Australia, Colombia and Peru for the first time in their careers. Their mega-hit “Round and Round” was prominently featured in the Oscar nominated 2008 film The Wrestler, and the band headlined ROCKLAHOMA last month.
One of the most popular rock acts of the past 20 years, RATT’s brand of guitar-driven melodic rock helped shape the LA ~ and then the USA ~ metal scene. The band boasts a deep catalog of hits including smashes like “Round and Round,” “Lay It Down,” “You’re In Love,” “Lack of Communication” and “Wanted Man.” The band has gone on to sell millions of albums worldwide. With 1984’s mega-platinum debut Out of the Cellar celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the band is looking forward to starting a new chapter with new music to complement the impressive legacy they have established over two-plus decades.
To date, the Grammy-nominated Extreme have released five albums, plus a greatest hits set, selling over 10 million records worldwide. They also achieved a #1 hit single on the Billboard Hot 100 with “More Than Words” from their 1990 multi-platinum album Extreme II: Pornograffitti, which they followed with the Top Five “Hole Hearted.” Although these two acoustic hits brought the band great mainstream success, their trademark sound has always been more a mix of hard rock funk fueled by guitar virtuoso Nuno Bettencourt’s signature style, Gary Cherone’s resonant vocals and socially conscious lyrics, Pat Badger’s rock solid bass, and the hard hitting Kevin Figueiredo on drums. Extreme has recently been introduced to an entire new generation of fans with the inclusion of their song “Play With Me” in the popular video game Guitar Hero as well as “More Than Words” featured in hit movies Forgetting Sarah Marshall and The Love Guru.
Catch these two hard rock legends at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom on August 7th.
HOCKEY
For a band that named its forthcoming Capitol Records debut album (to be released Aug. 25) Mind Chaos, the collective thinking on modern dance-rockers Hockey is anything but chaotic: this is a band clearly set for a worldwide breakout this year.
With a cohesive album marked by ingenious, assured song craft and fresh, loose-limbed new-wave-flavored dance-rock propulsion ~ “debauched, joy-inducing floor-fillers,” according to Arena Magazine ~ Hockey may have already located and embodied the zeitgeist of 2009 with lyrics and an outlook that’s both “soulful and knowingly sarcastic” (Arena).
Hockey played four hotly-anticipated gigs at the famed South By Southwest music festival in mid-March, following a series of downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn shows that stoked a chorus of on-line cheers and a notice in Paste Magazine‘s 10 New Artists to Watch in 2009. Two smashingly successful visits to the U.K. in December and in February (with Passion Pit) have built Hockey’s international momentum right up to the U.S. release of the kick-off single “Too Fake,” whose video and digital single are available now. The video has been officially added at mtvU and has seen play on LOGO and mun2. MtvU also selected Hockey to participate in their “Ahead Of The Curve” initiative; the promo spots debuted on the network and mtvU.com in April and are continuing throughout 2009.
Formed in Los Angeles five years ago by founders Ben Grubin, lead singer, and Jeremy “Jerm” Reynolds on bass, Hockey is now based in Portland, Oregon as a quartet with Brian White on guitar, and Anthony Stassi on drums. MIND CHAOS was released independently, and the group signed to Capitol late in 2008. The album will be remixed and remastered, with new songs added, for the upcoming international release.
With “song away” acting as a holistic mission statement wrapped in a nod and a wink, “These scruffy bike-riding vegans could easily be enjoyed by fans of Dylan, Springsteen and the Hold Steady as much as they could by devotees of LCD Soundsystem” says U.K.’s Guardian newspaper. “See them now while they are still playing small rooms,” advises Time Out New York.

Priscilla Renea
As a pop-music singer/songwriter whose styles unite like a teen’s iPod on shuffle, Priscilla Renea is a true product of the Internet Generation. Having already showcased her musical talents to over a million viewers from the comforts of home, she has been self-promoting her musical craft on YouTube for a little over a year. Since then, Priscilla’s songs have had over 1.6 million views, over 30,000 channel subscribers and scores of imitators. Now signed to Power/Capitol Records, fans can finally experience this YouTube-sensation beyond the webcam with the release of her debut EP Hello My Apple (released March 31) that features three tracks that were among her most popular on YouTube: “I Fell in Love,” “Hello My Apple,” and “Cry.” A Navy kid who attended more than twenty schools in her adolescence, Priscilla gravitated to choirs and theater groups, winning her first musical theater competitions as a high-schooler, and dreaming of making it on Broadway. It wasn’t until her senior year of high school in Vero Beach, Florida that she discovered her natural talent for writing catchy, pop songs only after her father gave her a guitar for Christmas. Some teenage girls write in their diaries and lock them with a key; Priscilla poured her heart into songwriting and shared it with a social network of soon-to-be fans.
Cast on MTV’s Say What? Karaoke show, Priscilla’s page views spiked and her songs were being re-posted as covers by a growing fanbase. To further her musical growth beyond her bedroom, Priscilla joined the Atlanta-based production company Power Entertainment, where she honed songwriting for herself and for other artists, impressing collaborators with her knack for quickly harnessing inspiration into unforgettable songs. Recognized as an emerging talent and one-to-watch on the pop music scene, among Priscilla’s first commercial partnerships is an advertorial campaign in Giant magazine and Kimora Lee Simmons’ trendsetting Baby Phat line of fashion, footwear and accessories themed as ‘The Road to Success’. Priscilla Renea’s debut album, Jukebox, is schedule for release later this year with production by several in-house Power Entertainment talents, along with Brian Kidd (Enrique Iglesias, Pitbull, Nappy Roots) and Soulshock and Karlin (Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Keyshia Cole, JoJo).
