Jennifer Garner, Nicole Richie and Keira Knightley always wow us on the red carpets thanks, in part, to style consultants. But what about us? We, who flip through fashion magazines, scan blogs and feverishly watch red carpet events to get the latest on what’s in and what’s out…Who can we go to get the help ~ the look ~ that we need?
Well, look no further than Worcester’s own Misty Moscoffian.
Some of you may recognize 26-year-old Moscoffian as the general manager of Bocado Tapas and Wine Bar. Some of you may recognize her for her great sense of style. But what you may not know is that Moscoffian is a style consultant.
A self-described “girly-girl,” Moscoffian always had an eye for style. “People have always compliments me on my clothes, even if it was something that I just put together,” she explains. After being approached on numerous occasions for advice about “what to wear and how to wear things,” or even going shopping with ~ or for ~ people, Moscoffian decided to create her business.
“I haven’t been doing it long but it has always been a passion,” she says.
But Moscoffian doesn’t just work for the client ~ she works with the individual. When she first meets a client, “I ask the person what it is that they’re looking for,” she explains. “Do they feel that they need help with everyday, functional clothes for work or casual days and nights out? Or are they in need of updating their closet season to another?”
As a style consultant, Moscoffian will do anything from organizing closets to being a personal shopper. She meets with a client as many times as needed until the person is more confident. “And by more confident, I mean confident in choosing their clothes, confident in how they look in their clothes and, most important, confident in their own styles.”
What Moscoffian enjoys most as a style consultant is “…helping someone find something they would never consider wearing, and having them find out that they not only look great but feel great too.”
Another job perk? “By the time we’re done, my clients become friends,” says Moscoffian.
Each season, Moscoffian carefully researches upcoming trends and styles for her clients. “I love the Style Network, flipping through magazines and taking notes on everything I see on the street,” she says. “I use all these things to make an original style.”
According to Moscoffian, bright colors are big this spring. Another favorite trend is the wrap dress because “…they look good on all body types and they’re easy to dress up or dress down.”
A big fashion faux-pas: “Nylons with open toe shoes are the biggest no-no,” warns Moscoffian.
So what’s the style consultant’s own personal style like? Moscoffian says that she doesn’t have one certain type of style. “I like to look classy, feel sexy and be comfortable,” she says. “Sometimes I mix different looks to try to create something original.”
Moscoffian cites a seemingly diverse group of individuals as her style icons ~ Jackie Kennedy-Onassis, Gwyneth Paltrow, Demi Moore, Julia Roberts and Jessica Alba ~ but they all have one thing in common: “[they] all have a classy, yet sexy sense of style.”
Moscoffian says that it comes down to how you feel in your clothes. “Everyone should be comfortable in what they wear,” says Moscoffian. “Comfort will bring confidence.”
And, according to Moscoffian, having a good sense in style does not mean blowing your hard- earn cash at high end stores.
“People should understand that it’s alright to shop at places like Target and Khols. These stores have a lot of amazing designers like Vera Wang, Jovovich-Hawk and Patrick Robinson,” says Moscoffian. “I tell people that looking good doesn’t always mean big dollar signs.”
