IMG_4486.jpgThe most famous thing about Mezcal tequila might be the worm, but the most famous thing about the new restaurant named after it is definitely the unique choices it offers. Introducing Mezcal, a southwestern and Mexican influenced tequila bar, located at 166 Shrewsbury Street in Worcester. Since its opening on November 16th, Mezcal has already proven itself a “must go to” destination.

Mike Covino, owner and operator of Mezcal, is enthusiastic about the newest edition to his Bocado and Block 5 mini-dynasty and has always been vocal about his passion for the city’s growth and diversity. “There really isn’t a place like this around,” he says. Covino feels that the opening of Mezcal is surely contributing to that evolution.

One of the most exciting aspects of the restaurant is its focus on tequila. The full bar is packed with a variety of over 100 different, 100% agave tequilas ~ and that translates to high quality. Prices range from $5 to $65. Not sure which one to have? Try a tequila flight that lets you sample a few different ones. Want to mix it up? Indulge in a variety of tequila cocktails or over 25 different margaritas. Covino comments, “We have the best possible $5 margarita. You’re not going to find that everywhere.”

If the unfathomable variety offered at the bar isn’t enough, take a look at the loaded food menu. Covino says, “The food is for everyone, adults, children, vegetarians, etc. Everything is under $20, except for the delicious 20oz rib eye steak.” Try not to fill up on the complementary chips and salsa while you’re waiting for some traditional Mexican and southwestern dishes including, burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas, tacos and nachos. Other choices include salads, fish and chicken, all prepared, of course, with a Mexican/southwestern flare. And don’t forget the guacamole bar, it is made to order and served just the way you like it.

Although the extensive list of tequila will rival the food menu for your attention, they share two important qualities: both are mouth-watering and affordable. Covino explains by saying, “Mezcal is a full service, privately owned restaurant. We have a strong perception of value here.”

As you treat yourself to food and drink, let sounds of fast paced salsa, merengue, and Latin music enhance your experience. Covino describes Mezcal as “…fun and funky. The music adds to the colorful and flavorful vibe.” Mezcal plans to have more entertainment in the future, so get ready for the mariachi bands!

Mezcal is open 7 days a week, serving food Monday-Thursday until 10pm, Friday and Saturday until 11pm, and Sunday until 9pm. The bar is open nightly, 4:30pm-2am. Feeling spicy? Covino invites everyone to “Come try it!” Or, contact Mezcal at 508-926-8308 or www.mezcalcantina.com
