Burgeoning Local Film Studio Wants a Starring Role in the “New Worcester.”
By Steve Henricksen
Movie Producer Andrea Ajemian and Music Producer Kaz Gamble are currently working on Artigo/Ajemian Films’ upcoming feature film “We Got the Beat.” The six week local shoot will begin mid-September, with filming locations that include Foley Stadium, Becker College, Worcester public schools, and The Lucky Dog Music Hall. As we headed to press, the final decision about which actor will play the male lead had not been announced, but to give you an idea of the buzz “We Got the Beat” is creating, we can tell you agency submissions for the role of his mother have included Jane Seymour, Victoria Jackson, Ally Sheedy, Julie Warner, and Delta Burke. These two movie-moguls-in-the-making let us sit in as they chatted about what they’re calling “New Worcester,” an idea and reality they’re hoping to be a part of and to promote with their mission of using local talent and locations in all their films. It’s all about energy, creativity, taking risks, and joining together to make Worcester shine even brighter.
Kaz: I left Worcester to pursue a career in the music industry thirteen years ago, and have just returned to find a much cooler “New Worcester”. There are a lot of hip new restaurants, bars, and clubs. There is this creative buzz in the air which I’ve only experienced in Hollywood and NYC. What’s going on here??
Andrea: Back when I produced “Rutland, USA” in 2001, Worcester was a little “cranky.” 2006 is an entirely “New Worcester.” Bands, artists, filmmakers, hot young restaurant owners – this city is undergoing some major, beautiful changes, and right now the vibe is all about collaboration.” So why did you come home?
Kaz: I came back home because I’m doing research for a documentary film.
Why did you decide on coming back to Worcester from L.A. to shoot a third film here?
Andrea: The talent is here. People just need an outlet. So, where can you be found on a Friday night?
Kaz: I love the pomegranate cocktail at Block 5. Are the guys hotter in LA or Wu-town?
Andrea: No question, Wu-town. The guys here are Sox fans and have more sincere smiles. Plus, they know about Charlie’s Surplus! So tell me about some of the “New Worcester” hot spots.
Kaz: I love the Canal District. Jose Murphy’s, BLU, Club Car, Blackstone Tap ~ so many fresh hangouts within walking distance.
Andrea: But the hottest spot in Wu-town is the “We Got the Beat” production office! We’re so “New Worcester.”
