Meet The Tiny Artist with the Huge Voice (and Soul)
By Christine R. Walsh
She is a singer, songwriter, guitarist and all-around inspirational gal who is winning the hearts of audiences around the world with her ethereal vocals and thought-provoking lyrics. DiVine, (her real name is Kim DiVincenzo) may be a mere 25 years old, but her albums, Here and In Between and Hummingbird, display volumes of wisdom and experience. DiVine’s music brings a freshness that is deceivingly light upon first listen. A second listen reveals the passionate intensity which DiVine has poured into every aspect of her musical creations. In short, this chick is deep.
DiVine, who recently returned from a tour of London and Dublin, sat down with Pulse . The Scorpio divulged details about her soy-based vices and the truth about touring.
Christine Walsh: Kim. Before we get into the nitty-gritty, your website says you enjoy vanilla lattes. Quite the expensive habit, eh?
Kim DiVine: Oh man, I don’t want to know how much I spend on vanilla lattes because then I will realize how much better I can spend that money. But I would say I spend around $40 per month. They have to be soy since I am lactose intolerant and that costs more.
CW: So dairy is your kryptonite, you Superwoman. Moving right along, where did your spend your childhood?
KD: I grew up on Wachusett Street in Holden, MA. After a few moves I somehow ended back on Wachusett Street again…I guess I was meant to be there. I enjoyed growing up in Holden.
CW: When did music come into the picture?
KD: It wasn’t until high school that my voice teacher told me that I was actually the highest vocal part, a Soprano 1. I had a wonderful choral teacher who truly taught me how to find and hone my voice. And I realized that ~ wow! I had a big voice in little me. Who knew?
CW: I would kill to be five feet tall, like you. How do you create your songs?
KD: Explaining how I create a song is still a mystery to me. It definitely took some time before I could combine my words with a fitting melody and actually like the finished product. But all I can say is that I just feel it out.
CW: Kim, your blog said you were robbed during your recent tour. That must have tough.
KD: Even when you are so careful and smart while traveling, still you can have your most prized belongings stolen from you. But the best part of touring is meeting new people each night and sharing a live and totally unique performance with them. That exact setting, feeling, audience and the way you perform the song is unique only to that night and will never happen that same away again.
