McFadden Irish Bar & Steakhouse to open. McFadden’s, a chain of Irish bars which first opened in New York City and has locations in Boston and Chicago, will open its newest store in Worcester at the corner of Commercial and Front Streets, opposite the new City Square development. Can you say spin-off?

The Gym. That’s the name of the new club that’s opening at the site of the former Seoul Lecci on Main Street in Worcester. I can assure you that the only weightlifting going on here will be picking up a glass and tossing back a cold one.

El Basha in Tokyo. It looks like the El Basha brothers are at it again. Fresh off the launching of their third restaurant in Westboro, George Sahkat will be opening a Sushi restaurant at the former location of On the Rocks, located next door to their Park Avenue eatery. The new endeavor will be called Sushi by Kenzo.

Speaking of Japanese. Another new Japanese restaurant will be opening soon, this one in the Canal District. Shiro of Japan will open at 10 Millbury Street, right in Kelly Square.

Alfredo’s. Alfredo’s (as in Alfredo, the former chef at Primo’s) is the new Italian restaurant that recently opened where Two Cousins Pasta had been on Worcester’s Chandler Street. This was also the spot originally owned by the Struck for over 20 years.

Boulevard Diner celebrates 70 years. In an industry where the average restaurant closes in under a year, a 70 year milestone is one that certainly deserves our attention. On July 12th, the diner will offer its customers a 70 cent breakfast, lunch & dinner from 6am-6pm. In addition, they’ll be giving lots of prizes away. The Boulevard was opened 70 years ago by Freddy Gallanto. John “Ringo” George bought in 1965 and it has been in the family ever since. It’s now run by Ringo’s son Jimmy, who bought it from his mother in December of 1999. Jimmy closed it down for six months while he restored then reopened in May of 2000. The diner is open 7 days a week, 24 hrs a day. However, they do close on Sunday from 3pm to 7 pm (I guess everyone needs some time off!). As Ringo George used to say, “There’s no place finer than the Boulevard Diner.”

TriBeCa hires Chef. The TriBeCa, which will open shortly on Shrewsbury Street on the site of the former Amore, has hired Gary Kileen as its chef. Kileen formerly owned Thymes on Hudson, where he put out some very innovative cuisine.

Mega restaurants set to open. Two new mega restaurants are set to open shortly on Shrewsbury Street. Coral Seafood will open by August, while Rob Alhquist of the 111 Chop House will take over the space of his 200-seat restaurant in a week. The yet-to-be-named restaurant, located next to the Chop House on Shrewsbury Street, will feature outdoor dining and a bakery.
