January 2004 – Attention fun-seekers everywhere! Looking for a place to get away from the usual monotonous club scene? Tired of parking on dark side streets to avoid lot charges? Ladies, do you want to feel more secure on your girl’s night out? The newly renovated 9000 square foot entertainment complex in Marlboro called Rack n Roll provides great entertainment and is only a short distance away from Worcester. This club offers free parking and employs ten bouncers at night to keep the fun safe and clean.
When club owners Joe and Laura Palmer made plans to renovate, they had their loyal customers in mind. “We put in 14 billiard tables to add more entertainment.” Laura says. “That’s given us a new life and we changed the name so we would have recognition of what we represent.” And represent a top-notch billiards hall it does. With half the club dedicated to billiards and the other to dancing, you get the best of both worlds.
On any given Thursday, Friday or Saturday night, the club is jumping and bustling with patrons. At a $6 entrance fee, you get your money’s worth. There are two bars and two stages at the edges of the checkered dance floor. The third main bar stands in the middle of the venue serving both sides of the club at once. You can order Italian dishes from Joseph’s, the restaurant adjacent to the club, since the larger than life menus hang strategically around the billiard area. There are plenty of stools and chairs to accommodate the largest group of partygoers, and the DJ plays top forty hits every night so you can hear today’s hottest mix of music.
At this time, plans for 18+ nights have changed, but 18+ private parties are still acceptable. While the mix of underage drinking and driving is a strain on any business, the idea was to offer the younger crowd a fun night out without drinking. However, there is no guarantee those people under the legal drinking age are sober when they walk through the doors. “We can’t control what doesn’t happen in the club,” Palmer says of possible liabilities.
Still in all, Rack n Roll appeals to different age groups on different levels as the doors open at four in the afternoon and close at two in the morning. The after work crowd come in for a game or two, drinks, and good eats. The couples who like to eat out end the evening there. Club hoppers enjoy the atmosphere late night. It is also possible to book private parties for whatever occasion you wish. This is an all around very functional and conventional place to hang out.
