A unique pizza shop just opened up on Green Street in the Canal District offering its customers delicious eats while enjoying some fun old school candlepin bowling. Located at 85 Green Street on the first floor of the new Cove building, American Flatbread fits into the district perfectly, offering a fresh new option for dining along with a nostalgic experience which is near and dear to the people of Worcester. Candlepin bowling was invested in Worcester in the late 19th century making this a very appropriate addition to the city. This type of bowling features 10 pins that look like candle sticks with bowling balls that are quite small in size. Many would say that it is much harder to knock down all of the pins than the current day style of bowling.
The Worcester restaurant is their 11th location thus far since starting their first in Waitsfield, Vermont. Each of their unique locations is tailored to fit within their context giving the customers a truly authentic experience. The Worcester location does a great job at creating the experience of a classic wood fired pizza shop with the aesthetic of an old school bowling alley. The main dining area is on the ground floor which features high ceilings, a modern aesthetic and a large wood fired oven so you can watch as pizzas are made. They do a great job at capturing the aesthetic of the Canal District by using brick on the wall behind the pizza oven along with the use of natural wood across the dining area. Expressing the exposed mechanical systems on the ceiling helps to capture the industrial aesthetic by not hiding how the building functions. The main dining floor has quite a variety of seating options, from formal tables, to lounge chairs and a full bar.
The bowling alley is located downstairs, but don’t worry, if you want to bowl and eat, that’s the space for you. The bowling alley features comfortable leather booths with small tables where you can get food and drinks delivered while you bowl. A great experience for the whole family! The walls are lined with vibrant colors, murals of old bowling alley signs from around Massachusetts along with old time black and white photographs of candle pins bowling alleys in action. The downstairs also features a variety of seating if you don’t want to bowl but still enjoy the experience and be part of it. There is a full bar, tables and chairs along with bar seating overlooking the bowling area for a spectator experience. A visit to American Flatbread is a great way to enjoy a night out for dinner and get some exercise at the same time!
