Cody Runnels

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and if you’re like me, you can’t show up to a get together empty handed. I always have high hopes of cooking an elaborate side dish that wows the entire party, but I’m a massive procrastinator and also Tears of the Kingdom needs my undivided attention. My plan for this holiday season is to heavily lean on the always amazing Ed Hyder’s Mediterranean Marketplace. I could write an entire column about their dips, halva and homemade goodies, but the focus here is beer. Please enjoy this list of beers that are typically available at Hyders for all the Thanksgiving events.

Night Before Thanksgiving

It’s no secret that Thanksgiving Eve is one of the biggest party nights of the entire year. You’re probably going to run into people you graduated with, so the key to this night is finding drinkable beers that you can chug when you’re trapped in a MLM conversation with the popular girl who peaked in the 11th grade.

Grimm Artisan Ales, situated in Brooklyn, New York, is renowned for its innovative and carefully crafted beers. The Castling Farmhouse Pale Ale, available in a set of four 16oz cans, is a delightful fusion of traditional farmhouse ale characteristics with a contemporary pale ale profile, delivering a refreshing yet complex drinking experience.

Belleflower Brewing Co., a notable brewery based in Rochester, New York, is celebrated for its unique and diverse beer offerings. Folk Magic, one of their signature brews, captures the essence of a well-balanced and flavorful beer, with subtle hints of malt and a pleasing hop presence, showcasing the brewery’s commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

Beer to Impress Your Family

Thanksgiving Day varies from person to person, but I think it’s always good to steal the show. I recommend a large format bottle of something drinkable that won’t take away from dinner, but will leave an impact. The Referend Bier Blendery, a revered brewery located in Pennington, New Jersey, is well-regarded for its meticulously crafted and complex sour beers. The Berliner Messe: Veni Sancte Spiritus 2019, presented in a 750ml bottle, is one of their remarkable creations, known for its exquisite balance of tartness and fruity notes, creating a refreshing and unique drinking experience. With its carefully aged blend, this particular brew showcases the brewery’s dedication to traditional European brewing techniques combined with a modern touch, making it a sought-after choice among sour beer enthusiasts.

Post Dinner Fire Pit

I don’t think I’ve ever actually sat around a fire pit after Thanksgiving dinner, but I feel like the idea of this it’s very New England and magical and this is my column so I can dream if I want to. So for this hypothetical situation I would bring Austin Street Brewery’s Walcott Smoked Brown Ale. This 5.7% English Brown Ale has a rich smoky flavor and will keep you nice and toasty. There is also East Rock Brewery’s distinct Krampus Lager Cherries, a unique brew blending the crispness of a lager with a delightful infusion of cherry flavor.

Whether you’re celebrating with friends, family or peacefully at home with Link and Zelda, good beer is always well deserved. Check out Hyder’s and treat yourself to some unique beverages and freshly made goodies. Happy Thanksgiving!
