At the end of the winter it’s easy to feel cooped up, stuck in the rut of your daily routine and less than excited about the same notifications blowing up your phone day-in and day-out. A lot of us work right here behind a computer screen and work doesn’t leave our side with smart phones. It’s time to disconnect from this lifestyle, if only for a night or two. I was lucky enough to book a night away with Getaway House over my long weekend, and it resulted in rejuvenation.

Getaway House is a beautiful site in Southern NH that boasts modern cabins fit for 1-4 people. The company offers these escape locations “under 2 hours” from three major cities: Boston, Washington DC, and NYC. Thankfully, the New Hampshire location is also just under 2 hours from Worcester. The cabins have heat/ AC, a kitchenette with electric stovetop and mini fridge, drinkable water, shower, and maybe one of the more exciting accommodations: an electric “space” toilet. Also, a fire pit with two adirondack chairs and equipped with firewood for purchase sits just outside your cabin.

Beyond these small luxuries, there’s a giant window providing sufficient light throughout your tiny house- across a comfortable bed and sitting area. The window provided more than just sunlight. The stars twinkled through the wading moon that evening. The morning entertainment featured a family of chipmunks chasing each other across the snow. The view outside this window was private and full of trees. There was even a space between the window and bed to practice some twilight yoga.

“Cabin Porn” book, Work in Progress Painting, Kuju coffee and morning sunlight.

The only downside is the lack of local outdoor activities. There’s a State Park nearby but that’s about it. This is a great option for those who don’t like traditional camping or don’t care for hiking or other outdoor activities. Maybe you really just need the time to relax or work on something creative- this is it!

Spending time listening to music, meditating, painting, cooking a simple meal alone or with enjoyable company with little to no social media, email or internet usage at all was rewarding. With the weather warming up and the popularity of these sites growing rapidly, the prices will surely follow the demand. Make the time to book as soon as you can- once you like Getaway House on social media, you will be reminded every day what you’re missing with the beautiful photos in their ads. The experience itself was truly a reflection of their advertising and I was not in the slightest disappointed. The hardest part is returning to civilization and your routine again. Thankfully, they leave you with some great advice on how to make your life a little more like Getaway, everyday.
