Worcester needs more people like Greg Walkowiak ~ people who are not only willing to go the extra mile, but those who are willing to get there with authority.

Walkowiak let nothing distract him from what was to become his new direction and passion. Having been hurt at work, Greg took the opportunity to head back to school at Cape Cod Community College. With this new education under his belt, he accepted the role of music director at WKLL and began an internship at Pixy 103 in West Yarmouth for several years. He had, after all, had an interest in music instilled in him from a young age. As Greg tells it, “I’ve always listened to music. Since I was knee high to a grasshopper.” The interest was there and now he had the tools at his disposable to take interest to employment. He was ready to dig in.

Worcester State University. With a recent “upgrade” in moniker from Worcester State College, it was only natural that there would be a bit of enhanced expectations for the university; with those expectations came a reinvigorated interest in the university’s in-house radio.

Enter Greg W., who became the acting treasurer and music director of WSUR. When Walkowiak joined the team, he brought with him an intense enthusiasm that resounded throughout the college. He had seen how things were done and had a solid idea of how certain things could be better, “I think [radio] has evolved. It’s definitely a challenge, but I think we can do it.”

Under Greg, the entire station has been rewired, they’ve updated the equipment, and WSU has a honest-to-goodness, high quality radio station of its own. Greg is quick to explain that the transformation is not a weight he bears on his shoulders alone: “We got the funding from the student senate which helped tremendously. It’s very exciting and everyone has contributed. This is for them, this is for the students.”

But Walkowiak and the WSUR team have set their sights on an even loftier goal ~ helping the entire Worcester community. “We’re not afraid of working with people to make things better,” Greg says. “We want to have events and we’re always open to suggestions.”

Make sure to tune in online very soon to WSUR radio by pointing your mouse to www.worcester.edu/wsur. Listen in to Greg’s own show, “Crazy G and the G Spot.” Then keep your eyes peeled for WSUR events and shows. If you are a student, drop by to say hi to Greg and the rest of the gang at the station ~ it’s located right in the heart of Worcester State University.
