Nathaniel Connors’ Revelation: Creatures Rule the Night

By Alex Kantarelis

Fitchburg writer Nathaniel Connors has published his first book, Revelation: Creatures Rule the Night, and with it created a futuristic sci-fi horror with a story so addicting that it had me staying up an hour later each night just to cram a few extra chapters in before bed.

Set in the year 2246, the book follows main character Jonathan Armand, the last member of a family made up of generations of warriors.  It is his destiny to be a leader and a fighter.  Early on, the story takes us to Star Base Academy, where Armand is a senior gearing up for graduation.  Here we get to know our characters through their totally casual dialogue written so well by Connors.  Even though the setting is several hundred years in the future, the characters have a certain realness to them.  They are very relatable, and as we get to know them more, it’s very easy to feel a certain love for them, especially for Armand.  “There’s something very human and real about him,” the 34 year old Connors said, describing Armand.  “I wanted him to be your every day guy.  He’s a soldier but you don’t look at him as this massive warrior,” he added.

The plot turns into a roller-coaster ride as the story places us right in the middle of a futuristic war on Mars.  The Mars scenes are described in a way that really puts you on the red planet.  Things continue to worsen for the characters as the story delves into a horrific post apocalyptic nightmare where Armand has to find a way to save humanity, battling forces that aren’t exactly human.

Connors has managed to place us in his futuristic apocalyptic world (or I should say universe) with great ease.  He paints a clear picture of what is going on and gives us just enough information so that we can fill in the gaps ourselves.  He uses very simple situations to help us relate to the characters on a personal level.  “One of my favorite things in the book was describing how they hang out in the cafeteria,” Connors said.  “I try to make it so that people can relate.”  Connors makes us care about the characters, which makes the story so much more intense.

This is only part 1 of 3 parts of this story.  Connors plans on releasing the 2nd book later this year, and the 3rd will be coming up after that.  I am very excited to see where the sequel takes the story.  Head to Amazon.com (where the book is available in both paperback and for Kindle) or BarnesandNoble.com to purchase Revelation: Creatures Rule the Night. And keep your eyes on Nathaniel Connors.  He’s going to give us great things in the future.
