Re:Generation is the latest documentary from Amir Bar-Lev and explores how music frequently inspires and occasionally confounds us. If you love music in general, you should see it. If you love dance music, you must see it.

In Re:Generation, five of today’s hottest DJs ~ Pretty Lights, Skrillex, DJ Premier, Mark Ronson and The Crystal Method ~ were assigned what it seemingly a simple task: to produce a new track in an old genre. Pretty Lights was assigned country, Skrillex was assigned rock, DJ Premier classical, Mark Ronson jazz, and The Crystal Method R&B.

Each DJ was paired with a legendary act from his assigned genre. Together, each “duo” attempted to create something new by combining the best of the past with the sounds of today. It’s a unique experience to be able to see and hear these artists collaborate with some of the 20th century’s greatest artists.

Re:Generation sheds light on all the people behind the scenes of production ~ the nameless and faceless techs who work to make the music sound better and the musicians who play instruments on a track but whose names never appear on an album cover. You’d be surprised how many of these people there are, how many people it takes to create the final product.

Re:Generation also gives some insight into a common question about dance music ~ are DJs who work their magic via laptops worthy of the same respect as musicians who play physical instruments? After watching Re:Generation, you’ll see that the answer is a definite yes.

What makes Re:Generation work is the fact that it encompasses both sides of the DJ world ~ the emotion that comes with working in the studio and the crazy, fun times of the rave. Re:Generation is an awesome film about music and the pleasure it brings to its listeners.
