Paul Mitchell Hair Shows are smaller versions of the original “Gathering,” an annual show held in Las Vegas, Nevada. The show is hosted by the late Paul Mitchell’s son, Angus Mitchell, along with Robert Cromeans, and features top stylists Stephanie Kocielski and Takashi Kitamura. This year, Pulse was lucky enough to see what all the buzz about hair is when this year’s “What Inspires You?” tour came to the Hanover Theatre!
Each “mini Gathering” is unique in the sense that all of the models were chosen from local auditions. “Some girls have never had any modeling experience,” Kocielski shared, “and some have never worn heels or dresses!”
The first half of the event is focused on clients ~ new money, old money, and no money. Basically, these are classifications of clients based on how long they’ve been a client / how much they’re willing to spend to have good-looking hair. The bottom line ~ make your clients “chemically dependent,” make sure they have a very positive experience in your salon, so they keep coming back for more! I’m sure you’re thinking, “I could go buy some boxed color for ten bucks instead of spending tons of money at a salon.” Sure, you definitely could, but as Cromeans says, “Quit your bitchin’ ’cause you did it in the kitchen.” There is some truth to that ~ you get what you pay for!
The best is saved for last ~ each stylist cuts models’ hair into unique, out-of-this- world creations based on something that inspires him or her ~ and for each of them, that inspiration is completely different.
Mitchell’s inspiration was cars ~ his models came out in extravagant outfits, fully equipped with car lights and all! The models then proceeded to have their hair cut into artistic masterpieces while sitting on a mechanic’s lap! Cromeans’ inspiration was more business-based. As fun facts about corresponding companies cycled behind them, models came out wearing brand-themed attire from places like KFC and Starbucks. What’s more, each model’s hair was sectioned and held by balloons ~ which Cromeans popped with his scissors as he worked!
In two hours, audience members are given not only an extravagant show featuring unique wardrobes and live haircuts, but more importantly, stylists are given business advice from a team who really knows its stuff ~ because it’s not just about cutting hair, as Angus Mitchell points out. “Your client should be given an experience, not just a haircut.”
