The Registry. Steve Hopkins has opened The Registry, an American Food restaurant, at the site of the former Apsara and Thai Cha da on Worcester’s Park Ave. In case anyone is wondering about the name, the building use to house the Registry of Motor Vehicles about 20 years ago.
Can I Give You Fresh Bread with That? Shrewsbury St. Bread & Pizza, owned by John Grosse, may be opening for dinners on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. You get to have Grosse’s great food while sitting by the front window of his bakery. He claims that the entrees will all be priced in the $12 range. No opening date has been set, but Grosse says it’ll be soon. He is also baking old fashion Italian cookies for the holidays.
Speaking of Italian Cookies. Christina Ernst from Clinton’s Via Alto 27 will be baking and selling Italian pastries for the holidays. She may also be taking special requests. Christina is from Rome and opened the restaurant in Clinton a couple of years ago. Via Alto 27 (27 High Street) is pretty authentic and they just got their full liquor license.
Square It Away. We recently reported that Colonel Boothe of Muncheez fame has taken over the kitchen at the Canal District’s Square One. The Colonel has some big things in store. For one, he has a food challenge. If you can eat his giant Calzone, you can eat free at Square One for 2 months. He also has some interesting food on the menu, like the donut burger ~ a homemade donut topped with a burger ~ or his macaroni and cheese pizza.
TriBeCa Closes. TriBeca restaurant on Shrewsbury Street has hung out a large “Restaurant for Sale” banner. The restaurant went up for sale the last week of November. We couldn’t figure out if they are still open, but as observers pointed out, “No one hangs a sign like that and still expects business.” The eatery had been struggling with its concept since it was purchased about a year ago.
Castle’s Holiday Feast. The Castle Restaurant in Leicester is hosting their annual holiday feast on Sun., Dec.19th from 5-9pm this year. The five course meal, including wines, is $98 per person. Call 508-892-9090 for reservations.
New Box Office Manager. The Theater Café on 529 Main St. in Worcester, a few doors down from the Hanover Theatre, has new owners. Bill Aldrich and Sam Guffy recently purchased the Main Street eatery.
Sweet T. Tony Sanders, the former owner of Vibes on Worcester’s Water Street is rumored to be opening a Southern Style restaurant in the Quinsigamond Village/ Blackstone valley area of Worcester. Sanders is originally from Georgia, so his recipes should be authentic.
People Helping People. The People’s Kitchen, a Niche Hospitality Restaurant, will be hosting a benefit for the Greater Worcester Chapter of Habitat for Humanity on January 26, 2011. The 5 course dinner starts at 6pm. TPK is located at One Exchange Place in Worcester. Call 508-459-9090.
