The Black Dahlia Murder – Majesty
By Jillian Locke, Music Editor
“Losing yourself in the moment…I just have so much fun, I don’t know how to not have fun doin’ what we’re doin’, you know?” Vocalist Trevor Strnad loves metal and singing for a metal band probably more than Donald Trump loves money. For serious. Metal is life, and this is the definitive mantra for the rest of The Black Dahlia Murder and their first ever DVD, Majesty, which was filmed during the 2008 Summer Slaughter tour and their tour supporting Children of Bodom and released on May 12th, 2009.
Partying, skating, dancing, samurai swords, beat boxing, backyard surgeries, and let’s not forget (tour/merch manager) Karim and the ape suit. Moving right along, there’s some slow motion walking, nakedness, pee bottles, puke-age, white shoes, wet shorts, gas station munchie stops, lots and lots and lots and lots of fast food, more dancing, general tomfoolery, harassing the locals, a laugh a minute…oh yeah, and that whole metal bit, which they do very, very well.
There’s a reason Majesty hit #2 on the US Billboard Top Music Videos Chart and #5 in Canada with their first ever DVD: TBDM are genuine, unassuming, hilarious, and have abandoned all hope for any sense of normalcy. They are who they are, and the US and Canada loved every ridiculous moment. TBDM displays the passion, the humor, and the complete abandon that attracted every metal head to the genre in the first place.
Example ~ upon entering the Amoeba Music Store (which I visited back in February and can say, first hand, has an amaaaazing metal section) in L.A., Strnad had this to say: “I go in here and I fart so much, because I’m at peace.”
In addition to documenting copious amounts of partying and HIGHlarious shenanigans, TBDM also includes a second disc packed with all of their music videos, in addition to select live sets from their jaunts across the globe. Shot, directed, and edited by Robbie Tassaro, this monster of a double DVD packs over three hours of one of the most entertaining documentaries about a metal band…EVER.
P.S. ~ Rob Lowe loves TBDM. This fact alone is worth the cost of the DVD. Get into it.
