As the weather gets warmer, it’s finally time to ditch the long sleeved under-armor for the morning run!! So what’s to wear this spring for your workout? Here are some fail proof guidelines to go by.
My personal belief is: “If it feels good, wear it!” If you feel great working out in your boyfriend’s oversized Nike Tee and a pair of gym shorts, do it! The biggest fashion mistake you can make while working out is donning that super sexy outfit you just spent too much on. Then you can’t pay attention in kickboxing because you are tugging at your shorts as they ride up, fall off, or burst their seams. Comfort is key. You look your best when you feel your best. You can’t go wrong in a pair of super comfy yoga pants and a well-fitting tank. Also, there are some super cute lightweight running shorts out there that are perfect for almost any workout (just PLEASE be sure to get the kind that have the built in panties to avoid putting on a show during Pilates!).
Remember that the gym is a public place. If your workout outfit looks more like underwear than an outfit, you might want to reconsider. By all means, if you feel most comfortable in less, and it doesn’t distract you (or others) from an effective workout (but c’mon, what are the chances!), go for those boy shorts and the matching sports bra!
For you guys out there ~ Here are a few DON’TS for the gym this season. Even if you have great abs you’d like to show off, cut off shirts (and heaven forbid…MESH!) have been out for a LONG TIME. Stick to a plain old tee ~ and one that fits is preferable to one that might be a few sizes too small ~ see? Size DOES matter! Another item to avoid is the super short running shorts. I understand that if you are a runner, you may want to wear them on your runs. A good alternative for the gym would be some basketball shorts. Nike and Puma have an attractive and light weight selection. A little lower on the list of “dont’s” for the gym is the elastic bottomed sweat pants. They now make workout pants that have a straight leg. You can find them almost anywhere. Try them… please. Do yourself a fashion favor. Last but not least, let’s talk about underwear. It’s always a good idea to wear some under your sweatpants or shorts while working out. Hey, someone had to say it.
