By Erin Hansen
“NEXT, a Primer on Urban Painting” is a feature-length documentary that explores the world culture of graffiti-based visual art that has come to influence youth all over the world. Combining visual moments with interviews with painters, journalists, collectors, sociologists, DJs, art critics and other participants within the subculture, this DVD conveys the dynamism and creative brilliance of this important emerging artistic movement.
“NEXT, a Primer on Urban Painting” is a personal exploration of urban painting, which originated in the graffiti art of the 70s; since then, it has evolved to its current level of sophistication while retaining a vital connection to the streets. The art movement is pushing the boundaries of Western culture while being born within it. Informed by mythology, symbols, calligraphy, images, and events from around the world, these multiethnic artists are creating a new, global symbology for the 21st century.
Directed by Pablo Aravena, “Next: A Primer on Urban Painting” publicizes and gives important emerging established artists their due. It also profiles the next generation of artists who are beginning to make their mark. The film follows these artists while on tour, in their studios, and ~ most importantly ~ in the streets, documenting their work and live painting performances. Past live paintings and exhibitions have taken place in Montreal, Toronto, Tokyo, New York, Paris and San Francisco, among other cities. The film reveals the artists’ process, from the conceptualization phase to the creation of the work. With testimonies of painters, journalists, collectors other creators and participants within the subculture, the film probes and questions this important cultural phenomenon.
