Bands You May Not Have Heard of Yet…But You Will!
We here at thePULSE are committed to giving local bands who are just under the radar, whot haven’t quite broken through yet, a little push. There’s a catch, though ~ we’ll only feature a band if they first nominate a band for the next issue, and so on. So check out this section to read more about some talented musicians who might just be the next big thing!
The Alchemystics
By Dani Tifft
Worcester is hip, and here’s one of the reasons why ~ The Alchemystics. With this band who, if called on it, identifies their sound as dance music but (thankfully!) avoids sounding like bump-n-grind or J-Lo, we’re getting the best of all musical worlds.
Unsure of how else to classify themselves, they consider themselves “the conduits of a great time” and Demse Zullo, the smooth-talking drummer (also credited with additional percussion and “soundzzz”), has some deep philosophical words about why genre is a figment of our collective imaginations anyway. “Half the time we can’t agree on what it is we are playing. Because at the root…all music is connected and the rhythms are interchangeable.”
Demse and his fellow bands members ~ Jay Metcalf on keyboards and “soundzzzz,” Garrett Sawyer tapping the bass, and Phaze bringing up the front with vocals and lyrics ~ all blend together in a seamless sound that resembles “rhythm-heavy hip hop / reggae” that is undeniably danceable and uniquely layered. Their sounds have hit the Worcester scene mainly at The Lucky Dog and Tammany Hall, and the guys call Worcester their “second home.” They love it here as much as you do and sing Worcester’s praises. “It’s is a rockers’ town, they are true rockers, which doesn’t have to do with rock music, it’s an attitude, they seem to go to the clubs to have a few beers, chill, and cut loose if the music moves them . The crowds have been getting bigger for us, and the response is great.”
On Friday, November 18th, they’re joining those Worcester “rockers” at The Lucky Dog at 10 pm, so come give the band some love and soak up their “great time soundzzz!”
With a growing fan base and energy to burn, the band is doing a really great job of expanding their musical repertoire and they hope to hit the road in the near future, spreading their seed throughout the land.
